Of rectangular form, the cabinet and hat chest are carved on the panel doors with various ‘bogu’ antique motifs and fitted flush to the frame, the side panels decorated with ‘bat-and-chime’. The doors open to reveal the shelved interior. The wood is of an attractive grain with ‘gold threads’ visible locally.
As Hu Desheng notes in 'Treasury of Ming & Qing Dynasty Palace Furniture’ (Beijing, 2007, vol. II, p. 552), the use of antiquities imagery dates back to the Daguan period (1107-1110) of the Northern Song, when Emperor Huizong commissioned Wang Fu to compile the thirty-volume Illustrations of the Xuanhe Antiques (Xuanhe bogu tu). During the Qing, especially under Yongzheng, such motifs appeared on furniture as ‘bogu’, often combined with floral or plant elements, and became widely popular as symbols of refinement and nobility.
Hu Desheng furthermore discusses the depiction of the ‘bat-and-chime’ motif. Dating a similarly executed example depicting on a zitan backrest to the mid-Qing period (ca. 1800), it symbolizes ‘fortune and long life as you wish’ or ‘eternal life as you wish’. (For the full text, please see: 2007, vol. II, pp. 566-568).
