Kangxi period bodies, 18th/19th century later enamels
Each modelled with a baluster body and tall flaring trumpet neck, brightly enameled against a yellow ground and decorated with long tail pheasants and other birds in and amidst flowering branches and trees growing on rocky landscape, the base of each with a lingzhi mark in underglaze-blue within a double circle.

During the 19th century, increasing Western demand for famille-noire and famille-jaune wares encouraged the later decoration of genuine Kangxi-period porcelain bodies, with black or yellow enamels applied to earlier vessels. The present pair exemplifies such tradition, retaining Kangxi-period bodies and marks with later added famille-jaune decoration.
Compare a closely related yenyen vase also of Kangxi period body and later decorated with 'birds and flowers' subject, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession no. 14.40.398), illustrated in Theodore Hobby, , New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1953, p. 10.
