The basket-weave decoration derives from the tradition of protecting large vessels with outer casings made of woven materials such as rattan and bamboo and became a distinctive decoration motif on Qing dynasty snuff bottles. Such decoration can be found on snuff bottles made from a variety of materials, including jade, amber, rock crystal and glass. It has been suggested that the design was particularly favoured at the Imperial court during the 18th and 19th centuries, and was associated with auspicious wishes for numerous offspring, happiness and longevity.
Compare with a jade snuff bottle of similar design but different shape, see Bonhams, New York, 19 Mar 2018, lot 189.
