Footnotes
This scene depicts the famous night attack of the Soga Brothers at the Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The brothers waited years to avenge the death of their father at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune, who accompanied Yoritomo on his hunt. In the centre, the younger brother Goro steps up to the pavilion, brandishing his sword above his head. To the right, one of Yoritomo's retainers thrusts a sword before him as another tosses a rope at the attacker. The Shogun can be seen leaping to his feet in the room at the upper right, reaching for his sword.
