Robustly potted of square section with tapering sides rising to flat shoulders and a flaring cylindrical neck, each face vividly enamelled with a different figural scene, including a scholar reading by candlelight, a scholar playing the guqin in a pavilion, literati gathered beneath flowering prunus on a moonlit evening, drinking wine and composing poetry, and a martial official seated at a table before a flag-bearing attendant, the neck encircled by the Bajixiang. 48.7cm (19 1/2in) high.

The four panels are painted with scenes drawn from some of the most celebrated figures and episodes in Chinese history and literature. One depicts Mu Guiying from the (), the legendary heroine who married the Yang general Yang Zongbao and, following the deaths of many members of the Yang clan in their defence of the Song dynasty against northern invaders, assumed command of the Yang armies. Renowned for her courage and military skill, she became one of the most enduring female warrior figures in Chinese popular culture. A similar scene is found on a blue and white square vase, late 17th century, illustrated by C.J.A.Jorg, , Amsterdam, 1997, p.91, no.79.
Another panel illustrates an episode from the (), in which Hu Ban is ordered to set fire to the lodging of Guan Yu. Before carrying out the plot, he discovers the celebrated general reading by candlelight and, moved by his reputation for loyalty and righteousness, ultimately abandons the mission and assists his escape. The story reflects Guan Yu's status as the embodiment of integrity and moral virtue.
A third panel depicts Li Bai at the celebrated Spring Night Banquet in the Peach and Plum Garden (), one of the most renowned episodes associated with the Tang poet. Amidst blossoming trees, Li Bai and his companions gather to drink wine and compose poetry, a scene celebrating literary accomplishment, friendship, and the fleeting beauty of spring. The final panel portrays Emperor Taizu of the Song dynasty, Zhao Kuangyin (r.960–976), visiting his trusted chief minister Zhao Pu on a snowy evening to discuss affairs of state. Known as the '' ('Snowy Night Visit to Zhao Pu') episode, the scene became a celebrated exemplar of enlightened rulership, illustrating the Emperor's diligence in government and his willingness to seek the counsel of capable ministers. The scene is depicted in a famous painting by Liu Jin, , Ming dynasty, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in , New Haven and London, 1997, p.200, fig.181.
