Footnotes
唐 陶加彩仕女俑
The full, rounded figures of Tang dynasty Court ladies are traditionally associated with the fashionable ideal of feminine beauty epitomised by Yang Guifei (719–756), the celebrated consort of the Xuanzong Emperor (r.712–756). Particularly characteristic of the High Tang, such pottery figures were produced as tomb furnishings and reflect the dress, coiffures and changing ideals of beauty of the Imperial Court. See related pottery models of Court ladies, Tang dynasty, illustrated in Pottery Figurine, Xi'an, 2014, pp.138-146. The coiffure of the present Court Lady is noteworthy for its rarity.
