The scene on this vase is after 'Jiaoyou Dianhua' (“Enlightenment during an Outing”), Scene Five, of the Ming drama 'Tanhua ji 'by Tu Long. Rather than showing the initial encounter, the scene appears to depict Mu Qingtai after his spiritual awakening, arriving with gifts to express his gratitude to Pindola and Shan Xuanqing. Pindola is a Buddhist holy monk and one of the Eighteen Luohan, while Shan Xuanqing is a Daoist immortal or otherworldly adept. Through their guidance, Mu Qingtai comes to perceive the illusory nature of wealth, rank and worldly achievement, and begins to turn away from secular life in search of Buddhist and Daoist truth. The presentation of gifts in the scene expresses reverence towards these spiritual figures and reinforces the drama’s central theme of renouncing worldly glory in pursuit of enlightenment. Such narrative scenes drawn from late Ming theatre reflect the close relationship between Chongzhen-period blue and white porcelain decoration, woodblock illustration and popular drama.
此瓶畫片出自明代才子屠隆《曇花記》第五出《郊遊點化》。畫中所繪應為木清泰受點化之後，攜禮前來拜謝賓頭盧與山玄卿之場景。賓頭盧為佛教聖僧，亦為十八羅漢之一；山玄卿則為道教方外仙真。二人點化木清泰，使其看破富貴功名之幻相，萌生離俗求道之心。畫面中人物攜帶禮物前來致謝，既表現對方外高人的敬意，也呼應劇中由世俗榮華轉向尋佛訪道的主題。此類取材自晚明戲曲傳奇的敘事畫面，反映了崇禎時期青花瓷繪與版畫、戲曲文化之間的密切關係。
