Of bulbous circular form tapering to an oval neck, flat rim and small mouth opening, carved with a luohan seated on a rocky outcropping and reading a sutra book below swirling clouds, reversed by Meng Haoran holding a civil tablet and riding his donkey while looking back at his attendant, a large rock picked out by a russet inclusion and flanked by a paulownia and towering pine.

The combination of Meng Haoran, a Tang dynasty reclusive poet (689-740 AD) and his attendant in search of the elusive prunus in the winter, can be found as a popular subject for snuff bottles, but few exist as finely executed as this current lot. Compare the brilliant rendering of the with its use of the russet skin to depict the 'strange rock' with a bottle in the J & J Collection, published in Moss, Graham and Tsang, , Vol. I, New York, 1993, no. 23, and a nearly identical composition with a scholar, shown in , no. 21.
