Comprising a smaller upper section with two doors, set above a larger cabinet with two doors opening to reveal two interior drawers, the doors and drawers fitted with metal hinges and plates, raised on square-section legs joined at the front by a shaped apron carved with archaistic scrollwork. 85cm (33 1/2in) high x 44cm (17 1/4in) wide x 26cm (10 1/4in) deep.

The scale of the present cabinet suggests that it was likely intended for storing smaller personal or scholar's objects. The structure of a compound cabinet is of the type known as dingxianggui, literally 'top-box cabinet', referring to the smaller upper cupboard set above a larger lower cabinet. Full-size examples were primarily used for storage, particularly of clothing and household possessions; see for example a pair of large compound cabinets, late Ming dynasty, illustrated in , New York, 1996, pp.188-189, no.73.
