Footnotes
十八世紀 白玉帶皮雕松鼠葡萄紋把件
The squirrel and grapes motif is a traditional emblem of fertility, abundance, and numerous descendants. The vine's abundant clusters of grapes, laden with many seeds, symbolise prosperity and a flourishing family line. Frequently shown climbing or feeding among the grapes, the squirrel reinforces these auspicious wishes, making the motif a popular expression of hopes for enduring prosperity and the continuation of the family.
A related white and russet jade 'squirrel and grapes' pendant, 18th/19th century, was sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 5 May 2025, lot 61.
