Footnotes
Delicately carved in high relief with openwork, this lot highlights the skill and craftsmanship of the master carver, with the Immortals depicted with exceptional naturalistic sensitivity, and the natural contours of the mountainous landscape skillfully cut out at varying levels of relief.
The Eight Daoist Immortals (Ba Xian 八仙) constitute one of the most widely recognised ensembles in the Daoist pantheon, each figure embodying a distinct mode of transcendence and carrying an attribute through which their powers are manifested. Zhongli Quan wields a feathered fan capable of reviving the dead or transforming objects; Lü Dongbin bears a sword to dispel demons and a fly-whisk symbolising self-cultivation; Zhang Guolao carries a bamboo tube-drum or rides his mule, denoting eccentric wisdom; Li Tieguai's iron crutch and gourd identify him as the patron of the sick and destitute; Han Xiangzi's flute evokes harmony and the transformative power of music; Lan Caihe, often depicted with a flower basket, represents carefree spontaneity and the renewal of nature; He Xiangu holds a lotus, emblematic of purity and health; and Cao Guojiu, with court tablet or castanets, signifies upright conduct and the redemptive potential of moral rectitude. Collectively, the group embodies the Daoist ideal that Immortality may be attained through diverse paths: discipline, virtue, art, eccentricity, or compassion, thus offering a multifaceted model of spiritual attainment within Chinese religious and artistic traditions.
Compare with a related bamboo-root mountain carved with the Immortals congratulating the Heavenly Queen Mother of the West on her birthday, Qing dynasty, in the Shanghai museum, illustrated in , Shanghai, 2012, p.117, no.52. See also in the Palace Museum, Taipei, a related boxwood brushpot, 17th/18th century, carved with scholars in the west garden, illustrated by Chi Jo-hsin, , Taipei, 2010, pp.104-110, no.24.
