Shendetang zhi mark, Daoguang
Sturdily potted in the form of five mountain peaks with flattened sides, one face painted in underglaze blue with a mountainous landscape depicting a fisherman, a woodcutter, and scholars in conversation, the reverse inscribed in xingshu (running script) with a lengthy inscription and mark. 21.3cm (8 3/8in) wide.

The present brushrest is inscribed with Yuan Haowen's 元好問 (1119-1257) celebrated poem ( 泛舟大明湖), a lyrical evocation of the famous scenic lake at Jinan renowned for its lotus-filled waters and elegant natural beauty. In the poem, the author describes expansive stretches of blooming lotus, mist-shrouded mountains reflected in the water, and the graceful presence of white egrets, creating an image of extraordinary tranquillity and refinement:
長白山前繡江水，
展放荷花三十里。
看山水底山更佳，
一堆蒼煙收不起。
山從西來青一彎，
天公擲下半玉環。
大明湖上一杯酒，
昨日繡江眉睫間。
晚涼一棹東城渡，
水暗荷深若無路。
江妃不惜水芝香，
狼藉秋風與秋露。
藍襟鬱鬱散芳澤，
羅襪盈盈見微步。
晚晴一賦畫不成，
枉著風標誇白鷺。
我時驂鸾追散仙，
金支翠蕤相後先。
眼花耳熱不稱意，
高唱吳歌叩兩舷。
四海爲家，不用長江限南北。
Which may be translated as:
The literary character of the present brushrest is further reinforced by the four-character mark (慎德堂製), 'Made for the Hall of Prudent Virtue'. The Hall of Prudent Virtue () was the principal residence of the future Daoguang Emperor within the Imperial Palace, completed in 1831, and porcelains bearing this mark form a distinctive group of Imperial wares associated with his personal patronage. The choice of Yuan Haowen's celebrated poem, together with the depiction of fishermen, woodcutters, farmers, and scholars, accords closely with the literati ideals of self-cultivation, moral reflection, and communion with nature embodied by the name of the hall itself. The present brushrest therefore combines poetic, pictorial, and Imperial associations, transforming a functional scholar's object into a sophisticated expression of cultivated taste.
