This rare ewer features restoration and retouching to the top of the handle, to a rim crack around the dragon head, around the chicken-head spout, to minor chips at the mouth and to a further small patch below the chicken head. Overall in good condition for its type and magnificent size with a rich crackled glaze lightly degreded with surface dirt.

说明：陸羽《茶經》（約成書於761年）將岳州瓷列為當時上乘茶器之一。岳州窰器亦為目前所知最早的貢瓷，深受南北朝宮廷推崇。
如本品般器形碩大、塑形雄健且釉質精良的雞首壺極為罕見，傳世例多藏於世界各大重要博物館，或定為岳州窰製品，或歸於位置較北的其他窰場，尤以越窰為主。可比較日本博物館藏兩件尤為相近的例子：其一藏於大阪市立東洋陶瓷美術館（編號00824）；另一件藏於熱海MOA美術館，圖載該館網站。另可比較明尼阿波利斯藝術博物館藏一例，定為中國北方窰場製品（編號2007.38）；以及東京出光美術館等藏例，與大阪市立東洋陶瓷美術館藏例一併著錄於Yutaka Mino及Katherine R. Tsiang，《Ice and Green Clouds: Traditions of Chinese Celadon》，印第安納波利斯藝術博物館，印第安納波利斯，1987年，編號36及圖36a至36e。
南北朝都城的皇室或高等級墓葬中亦曾出土造型相近的例子。可比較河南洛陽一座疑為北魏節閔帝元恭墓的大墓出土青釉龍柄雞首壺，其尺寸與本品相若，高44公分，器形亦極為相近，載於嚴輝等，《洛陽澗西衡山路北魏墓發掘簡報》，《文物》，2016年第7期，頁13，圖26。該墓墓主雖未有文字材料確證，考古學者依墓葬規模及年代推測，可能為北魏節閔帝元恭。另可比較北魏宣武帝（483–515年）景陵，以及南京棲霞靈山大浦塘一座墓主身份未明的南朝高等級墓葬所出土的相關器例；後者出土器物包括青瓷雞首壺，墓主或為南朝宗室貴族。 上述諸例亦見張天都博士於前文中的討論；張氏曾於1997年與其父張一斌共同參與岳州窰址的考古發掘。
