The present lot may have been intended as a wedding gift, being decorated with two magpies, bamboo, and plum blossom, which together form a visual rebus for (竹梅雙喜), 'double happiness for bride and groom'.
Brushpots combining a celadon glaze with white slip, underglaze cobalt blue, and copper-red are relatively uncommon. The use of copper-red to pick out the plum blossoms is particularly effective, lending warmth and emphasis to the composition.
Compare with a vase with similar design of magpies on a plum blossom tree in underglaze blue on a celadon glaze ground, Kangxi, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 1998, pp.94-95, no.62.
