Amoghapasha, meaning "Unfailing Lasso", is a manifestation of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. The lasso serves as a symbolic reminder of his compassionate ability to reach out and guide beings who remain distant from enlightenment.
This eight-armed form of the bodhisattva is depicted with silver-inlaid eyes that lend an arresting and lustrous gaze, while copper-inlaid lips provide a contrast to the warm bronze surface. He wears an elaborate crown, whose central petal takes the form of a half vajra. Seated in a calm meditative posture, he holds a water pot in his lower left hand and carries a blossoming lotus at his left shoulder, emblems of purity.
The throne, comprising a single tier of lotus petals above a stepped plinth supported by a pair of front-facing lions with a cascading textile swag and side tassels, became a hallmark of northwest Indian bronzes for centuries. An early example of this throne type is a Gilgit bronze bearing a inscription that dates it to the early 7th century (Rubin Museum of Art, acc. C2005.37.2).
The present figure bears resemblance to a 9th-century Swat Valley bronze of Maitreya, published by von Schroeder, , 1981, pp. 95, fig. 11H. See another very similar Swat Valley 8th/9th century figure of Avalokiteshvara sold at Bonhams, New York, 16 March 2025, lot 9.
