In the eighth century, Moorish forces established a flourishing province of Islamic civilization on the Iberian Peninsula, which included the establishment of a thriving centre for the production of lusterware pottery in the port of Málaga in the 13th century. After 1300, potters working in the Christian-controlled kingdom of Valencia, particularly in Manises and Paterna, eventually surpassed those of Málaga in the creation of lustreware. By the late fourteenth century, the artisans of Manises had perfected their craft, producing lustreware that was exported widely across Europe, especially to the Low Countries and Italy.
