A small number of saltglaze stoneware tankards or teapots celebrate Admiral Vernon's victory over Spanish forces at Portobello (modern-day Panama). For a teapot modelled as 'Burford', Admiral Vernon's warship, see Sotheby's New York, 20 January 2016, lot 371.
The scale of the loving cup gives the schematic map of the battle great scope and the engine-turned bands appear to simulate the waves of the sea and clouds in the sky.
When news of Vernon's victory reached home in March 1740, both houses of parliament addressed King George II, congratulating him on the success of his naval forces. The prowess and audacity of Admiral Vernon's fleet was highlighted by this report, stating that Portobello was taken 'with Six Ships of War only', repeated on the inscription on the loving cup.
