The Xi (觿) toggle originally evolved from an animal tooth used for untying knots, its chief feature being a pointed tip at one end. In earliest times people made them from animal bone or tooth, worn on the body for undoing knots. Once made in jade, the xi gradually lost its original function and became a symbolic pendant ornament. For a similar piece, see Palace Museum, Beijing, acc.no.新00128735.
觽最早由解結之獸牙演變而來。《說文解字》曰：「觿，佩角，銳端可以解結。」其主要特徵是一端呈尖角。最早古人以獸骨或獸牙製作，佩帶於身用於解結。以玉製觿後，逐漸喪失了其原始功能，成為象徵性佩飾件。《說苑修文篇》曰：「能治煩決亂者佩觿。」可知觿在古人眼裡有治煩決亂之意。（摘自故宮博物院網站）比較一相似白玉觿，見北京故宮博物院acc.no.。
