A closely related 'double-gourd' vase (31.3cm high) is in the Qing Court collection, now in the Palace Museum, Taipei (acc.no.guqi000092). Another related vase attributed to the late 18th century, decorated with medallions enclosing the characters in gilt metal on a blue enamel ground, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, illustrated by E.F.Strange, , London, 1925, no.33, pl.XV.
Compare a similar pair with the central medallion inlaid with mother of pearl and character in gilt-lacquer, Qianlong, sold at Bonhams London, 5 November 2020, lot 106; and another pair with gilt medallions, Qianlong, sold at Bonhams New York, 15 March 2021, lot 146.
The characters express the wish for good fortune and are frequently used to decorate objects bearing a double-gourd shape. The bottle gourd itself is associated with the Daoist Immortals, particularly with Li Tieguai who used the gourd as a container for medicine. The pairing of the bottle gourd with the characters thus creates a particularly auspicious object.
