Finely painted, with wide body, tapering above the low circular foot, the shoulder sloping to a vertical columnar neck flanked by a pair of angular handles; the body decorated with two shaped reserves, one enclosing cranes and a flowering prunus tree, the other with chrysanthemums and butterflies; all against a yellow ground with elaborate lotus scrollwork; the neck similarly decorated, with lappets and diaper borders above the shoulder; the shoulder with a band of iron-red bats flying among clouds on a green ground. Underside with a eight-character mark in seal script reading Zhonghua minguo san shi liu nian, followed by a seal Zhongzheng.
Note:
Known as "Jiang Ci (Chiang Porcelain)," these official wares were specially commissioned by Chiang Kai-shek in the mid-20th century as diplomatic gifts for foreign heads of state, senior generals, and dignitaries. Inheriting the essence of Qing dynasty imperial kilns, they frequently emulate the opulent famille rose porcelains of the Qianlong period and represent the absolute pinnacle of contemporary official porcelain production. Due to their exclusive political and diplomatic nature, surviving examples are exceedingly rare.
The present vase, finely enameled with floral reserves, is a good example of this group. It not only exemplifies this high standard of craftsmanship but also serves as a tangible testament to the friendship between Chiang Kai-shek and Admiral Charles M. Cooke, Jr.

Provenance:
Property from the Collection of Admiral Charles M. Cooke. Jr., USN, thence by descent.
Admiral Charles M. Cooke, Jr. was a distinguished U.S naval officer and a leading strategist who played a critical role in shaping American naval operations during World War II. After surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor as the commanding officer of the battleship USS Pennsylvania, he was appointed principal planning officer for Admiral Ernest J. King. Serving as the Navy's Chief of Naval Plans, Cooke was instrumental in managing the Pacific War and directing the fleet's critical transition from battleship-centric warfare to aircraft carrier task forces. He was present at the Allied invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach and concluded the war as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations.
Following the war, Cooke took command of the United States Seventh Fleet and U.S. Naval Forces, Western Pacific. During this tenure, he forged a deep and consequential relationship with the Republic of China’s leader, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. Later, after Chiang Kai-shek left for Taiwan and Cooke had resigned from service with the U.S. Navy, Cooke served as a naval consultant and played a role in strengthening the Nationalist government in Taiwan during the early 1950s. A close professional and personal bond existed between Madame and Chiang Kai-shek and Admiral and Mrs. Cooke and their families as evidenced by contemporaneous correspondence.
