The present lot is very rare due to its early date and unusual pale blue ground. See a similar turquoise-blue-ground cloisonné enamel tripod incense burner, Yuan dynasty, illustrated in the , vol.1, Beijing, 2011, pp.70-71, no.10, with similar base and leaves. See also a cloisonné enamel tripod incense burner, Ming dynasty, illustrated by H.Brinker and A.Lutz, , London, 1989, no.54. A further example, early Ming dynasty, is illustrated by B.Quette, , New York, 2011, p.96, fig.5:25.
The scrolling foliage on the present vessel is notable for its distinctive tri-lobed leaves, a characteristic feature of Yuan dynasty cloisonné enamels. Compare the foliage with a cloisonné enamel incense burner with animal-shaped handles, Yuan dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , op.cit., pp.64-65, no.8; similar tri-lobed foliage can also be seen on several other Yuan dynasty cloisonné enamel vessels, illustrated in ., nos.10, 12.
Related forms of foliage can also be found on Yuan blue and white porcelain. See, for example, a blue and white jar, Yuan dynasty, with tri-lobed leaves, illustrated in , Beijing, 2017, p.13; and a blue and white jar with dragons and tri-lobed leaves, Yuan dynasty, illustrated in , Shanghai, 2012, no.62. The use of this motif on the present vessel may therefore point to an earlier Yuan decorative tradition.
The present incense burner derives its shape from an archaic vessel, , which had the body divided into three lobes. This shape appears to have been revisited during the fifteenth century; see B.Quette, ., pp.94-95.
A related incense burner, Ming dynasty, 15th century, was sold at Christie's Paris, 9 June 2015, lot 54.
Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties》,紐約,2011年,頁96,圖5:25。
