The Romance of the Western Chamber (Xixiang ji 西廂記), a celebrated Yuan dynasty drama by Wang Shifu (王實甫), tells of the romance between the scholar Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying, whose love overcomes the obstacles imposed by her family and social conventions; its popularity made it one of the most frequently depicted literary subjects in Chinese decorative arts.
Compare with a related set of ten famille rose nesting bowls, Qianlong/Jiaqing without Imperial reign mark, which was sold at Christie's New York, 14 September 2018, lot 1366.
