Provenance
The more elaborately decorated example with Christoph Perlès (label to the base)
Both these vessels have apertures to their mouths and heads to be filled and poured from. The French faience factory of Nevers, situated in the middle of the country, was founded when Louis de Gonzaga of Mantua moved to Nevers on his marriage to Henriette de Cleves, Duchess of Nevers. Italian potters followed and their first products closely copied Italian maiolica. Other examples of these cats vary slightly in decoration, and another cat on decorated as the cat presented here on the right can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts.
