The vase illustrates one of the stories in the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety (二十四孝) when the young girl Yang Xiang protected her father Yang Feng from a fearsome tiger whilst harvesting millet, thereby saving her father's life. She was later rewarded by the country governor with grain and flags.
The vase would have originally formed part of a five-piece garniture comprising two gu-form vases, and three covered jars, each similarly decorated. A related jar and cover, Yongzheng and 65cm high with cover, is held in the collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden, inventory no.PO 6037.
