说明:Decorated with animal and taotie masks, scroll motifs and key-fret bands, this jade cup represents a fine Ming dynasty interpretation of a Warring States and Western Han period design. The geometrical carvings are complemented by the grain of the jade itself, its light celadon tone broken up ochre and russet inclusions. The three rams (san yang) on the lid add further interest to the piece, echoing the three splayed feet on the base of the cup and forming the auspicious rebus sanyang kaiti ('the three yang initiate prosperity).
Archaistic jade cups of this type are rare. Compare a similar example of closely related form and design with no lid in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (accession no. 2015.500.5.13), included in Zhixin Jason Sun, 'Masterworks of Later Chinese Jades from The Florence and Herbert Irving Collection', Arts of Asia, November / December 2015, p. 139, fig. 6; and another decorated with two griffins in Chinese Art from the Reach Family Collection, Eskenazi, London, 1989, cat. no. 5.
