说明:His hands joined before him, his gaze soft yet firm, his stance powerful yet reassuring, the present figure represents a rare and important example of early jade figural work.
From his stance, proportions, garments and headgear, the present figure may confidently be counted among a small group of similar figures generally attributed to the Western Zhou dynasty, following a seminal study of the group by Hayashi Minao; see ‘Seishu jidai gyoku jinzo no ifuku to toshoku / The dress and head ornament of the statue of man made of nephrite in the Western Chou period’, Shirin, vol. 55, no. 11, March 1972, pp 1-38. Hayashi identifies five core examples of this group, each closely related to the present, namely: a figure excavated from the eastern suburbs of Luoyang in 1959, originally published in Kaogu 1959.4 pp. 187-8; a figure acquired by Alfred Pillsbury from C.T. Loo and now preserved in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis (accession no. 50.46.246), illustrated in Chinese Jades: Archaic and Modern from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, London, 1977, cat. no. 76 (and cover) (Fig. 1);; a third more distantly related figure of similar stance and clothing but worked in the round, preserved in the Winthrop Collection at the Harvard Art Museums, more recently illustrated by Jenny F. So in Early Chinese Jades in the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, 2019, pl. 19C; and two figures preserved in the British Museum, London (accession nos 1945.10-17.39,39), more recently illustrated by Jessica Rawson in Chinese Jades from Neolithic to Qing, London, 1995, p. 282, fig. 1 — the latter almost identical to the present in form and decoration.
Aside from this initial group, surviving examples of such extraordinary quality and human subject matter are very rare. Compare another related figure acquired by Sir Joseph Hotung from Roger Keverne, London, now preserved alongside the two aforementioned in the British Museum, London (accession no. 2022,20334.135), illustrated in Rawson, op. cit., cat. no. 19:1; a bald-headed figure in the National Museum of Asian Art, Washington in Hai-wai Yi-chen. Chinese Art in Overseas Collections. Jade II, Taipei, 1991, pl. 27; and two figures uncovered from Tomb 63 in the Necropolis of the Marquis of State of Jin, Quwo, Shanxi Province in Gu Fang, The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China, vol. 3: Shanxi, Beijing, 2005, pp 117-8.
