Wang Xiaotang or Wang Di (1885-1924) was one of the most important porcelain painters of Jingdezhen during the late Qing and Republic period. He specialised in figure painting and used delicate pale enamel colours.
('Hall of Living in Benevolence'), formerly known as and originally constructed for Empress Dowager Cixi, famously served as the presidential residence of Yuan Shikai for eighty-three days during his brief reign as Emperor Hongxian (1915–1916). Porcelains bearing the mark are often acknowledged to have been commissioned during this tumultuous period, standing as the artistic benchmarks of Hongxian period ceramic production.
Compare a pair of famille-rose vases depicting Liu Hai and a three-legged toad, bearing the seals of Wang Xiaotang, sold at Christie's South Kensington, 14 May 2010, lot 439.
