Exquisitely painted with a lady sitting on a chair beside a vase of chrysanthemums and an open book, a child leaning over the arm of her spotted bamboo chair to observe two quails at play in a circular enclosure, two further boys observing the birds intently and a dappled dog also curiously looking on, the scene bordered with a narrow green diaper border set with three panels of pink flowers beneath a wider pink ground diaper border with leaf-form panels enclosing pink peonies, within a thin gilt floral scrolling border.
21cm (8 1/4in) diam. (2).

清雍正 粉彩描金薄胎侍女童子圖盤一對
Provenance: Vandekar family collection, thence by descent
The Chinese word for quail, an (鹌), is a homophone for an (安), meaning 'peace'. However, the bird was also used in quail fights ( 鵪鶉) for entertainment and therefore became a symbol of courage and of fighting spirit, characteristics which would have been desirous of young boys.
A closely related single dish was sold by Christie's New York, 22nd March 2024, lot 980.
